Aqua Malongane 2010 will be the 12^th anniversary of this competition that has been running since 1999. The competition is a fundraiser for Wenakker. Parque de Malongane is well known for its game fishing potential, beautiful beaches and excellent scuba diving. What makes this competition special is that it is not only anglers taking part but their families and people being there just for fun. There are no big prizes but the competition is keen but friendly, ideal for beginners. Everyone dines together each evening with Ginger Jacobs as entertainer since 1999. The management of Parque de Malongane helps with special tariffs and in many other ways.

 

Wenakker is a residential centre for 230 intellectually disabled adults from Mpumalanga. After screening and admittance most of them stay for the rest of their lives. Wenakker was started in 1969 by the parents of three intellectually disabled children and has grown into one of the largest private centres of its kind in South Africa.

 

Aqua Malongane started as a once off competition over 3 days but after the first competition was changed to a 5-day competition. The competition has raised funds to the amount of R680 000, 00 over the 9 years it has been running. The money was used to upgrade the laundry and kitchen and for medical appliances and furniture.

Once a year, during the last weekend in May, the peace and quiet of Moçambique is turned upside down when hundreds of rock & roll fans descend on Parque de Malongane for the annual STRAB music festival.

 

The Subterranean Rhythm and Blues Experience, or STRAB as it is more popularly known these days, started in 2003 when Ocean Ecstasy decided to add live music to their birthday bash weekend in Parque de Malongane. One band, Jack Hammer, and 60 people joined them on that first historic weekend. Since then it has grown into a proper festival with more than 20 bands and hundreds of fans filling Parque de Malongane to capacity. Bands play from Thursday to Saturday night and a high quality sound and lighting system is used to ensure a great experience.

 

What makes the experience so unique is that you have some of South Africa’s greatest rock & roll bands playing music in one of the most magical places on earth.�Bands are mainly selected from the alternative Afrikaans, Rock & Blues genres and are specifically selected on their live performances. Bands that have played at STRAB before include Piet Botha with his Jack Hammer band, Scicoustic, Southern Gypsey Queens, Albert Frost Trio, Dan Patlansky, Gian Groen, Die Kaalkop Waarheid, Tidal Waves, The Fake Leather Blues Band and many more.
